Overview of Read 180
Purpose and Audience
Scholastic’s READ 180 is a comprehensive reading intervention program for struggling readers in grades four through twelve. Stage A targets elementary students, Stage B targets middle school students, and Stage C targets high school students. This report reflects a review of Stage B. Students must receive a lexile score of 200 or above in order to test into Read 180. A daily lesson consists of one whole-group instructional session, three small-group, rotating sessions, and a whole-group wrap-up time. At the computer station, students are engaged in five different learning zones: Reading, Word, Spelling, Success, and Writing. The goals of the program are to increase the students’ decoding, fluency, comprehension, and writing skills.
Strengths of READ 180
• Research-based comprehension instructional techniques are used.
• Repetition of and multiple exposures to vocabulary and immediate corrective feedback are provided.
• Scaffolding is consistently provided throughout the program.
• Universal accessibility features (adjustable font size, keyboard navigation, text captioning) are included.
Weaknesses of READ 180
• Classroom management is key since students must be engaged in learning while at each station in order to benefit from instruction.
A favorite project was the Reading Art Show where students displayed their interpretations of their most preferred novel that they read for the year.
